Is Microsoft Ushering In A New Renaissance of Technology?

Today, Microsoft announced new hardware to make its intentions known. It wants to compete against Apple.

Announcements such as a new Surface Pro 4 will clearly do the trick for them. With new enhancements like a larger display, thinner design, stylus functionality improvements, a redesigned attachment keyboard and new Intel processors, their aim to take on the recently announced iPad Pro seems quite obvious.

Microsoft made announcements for new Lumia phones (Lumia 950 and 950 XL) with glance features, multiple antennas and ‘liquid cooled’. The continued commitment to Nokia’s legacy is definitely welcome in a tech world full of Androids and iPhones. In other words, Windows Phone is here to stay. On a side note, if you’re an AT&T subscriber, you’re in luck because the new Lumia phones will only be available exclusively to the nation’s second-largest network.

But even with all that and the new version of their Band device, the headliner was all about their new toy: the Surface Book.

The Surface Book is a first for Microsoft as they are starting to create actual hardware for their Windows software. Designed to compete against the MacBook Pro, it is a 13″ touch-screen laptop that doubles as a tablet. A new touchpad comes alongside a backlit keyboard and a stylus attached on the side of the screen.

The screen is a 13.5″, 267 ppi, 3000×2000 display. It also sports a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with face recognition to unlock and an 8-megapixel, 1080p video camera on the back. Nvidia GeForce GPU graphics will be added along with new sixth-generation Intel processors i5 and i7 (“Skylake”) that are said to power the device. That will apparently make it twice as fast as a MacBook Pro. The Surface Book comes with an SSD with options of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of storage, and RAM at either 8GB or 16GB.

As always, with new technology, the price tag will be a premium one. Prices range from $1499 for the 128GB to $2699 for the 1TB.

This stunning hybrid is sure to peak a lot of interest, especially in the business world where portability can matter greatly.

With this announcement of new devices, you wonder if Microsoft can finally showcase itself of being able to bring everything together in-sync along with the recently established Windows 10 operating system. As Apple has done in recent years, Microsoft seem to have concrete plans for the future of combining their software with their own hardware together for around-the-board functionality. Not counting the Xbox One, this could truly be a step in the right direction for Microsoft.
